Season 1 Stats: Impact on Detroit
During the season from January 27 through March 30, 2024, the teams trained for 55 hours (including 2 hours on every game day). They dedicated over 380 hours to participating in 51 community events and activities, showcasing their commitment to giving back.
This strong community focus resonated with fans, as the teams received 988 votes for their projects supporting the Ruth Ellis Center, Clean Love Project, and Women+Soccer Detroit.
For instance, SIS's support for the Ruth Ellis Center transformed the drop-in space at the Center. See the colorful transformation.
"Our young people love the vibrant colors of the space. This is only the first part of this massive project with more to come. Projects like this require community involvement and we were honored to have them in our space to create such for our young people."
— Nazarina V. Mwakasege, Director of Development and Advancement
The Teams' Dedicactions to the Community Extended Beyond Volunteering Hours
The final whistle blew, revealing a thrilling tie between Ball Kickers and Sweaty Iconic Sweeties (SIS). In a heartwarming moment, both teams opted to share the first-place prize money, demonstrating the power of collaboration over competition.
Both teams decided to donate half of the prize money to their partner organizations, to further amplifying their positive impact. Full announcement here.
We are grateful to Detroit City FC for their partnership and to Madeline Miller, founder and CEO of NexTiles, for sponsoring the $2,000 prize.
“Our founding league, the DCFL, was built out with a community service requirement. We share the Sensational League's commitment to community work, and we believe that soccer makes this possible by bringing people together and hopefully, making a difference in the world."
— Alex Wright, owner and chief creative officer of Detroit City FC
